The Calligraphy Coach

Wan-Chung is co-founder of a work tech startup and a former Learning & Development Director at a global FTSE100 company.

As a psychologist and coach, he uses innovative approaches to coach students and draw out their own experiential insights to catalyse their success in Chinese brush writing.

Wan-Chung coaches in English and Mandarin, and was trained in brush writing using both the right and left hand.

Our Approach

Engaging with the art of Chinese brush writing through a warm and fully guided experience.

What We Write

We curate poems from China’s rich literary heritage, especially from the Tang and Song dynasties — eras when art and culture flourished. These selected works often celebrate the changing seasons and capture the essence of nature’s beauty, offering both inspiration and depth to calligraphy practice. Our students are also involved and invited to curate and suggest poems for the class to practise together.

How We Write

We specialise in the exciting and versatile Semi-Cursive Script, also known as XingShu (⾏书) or running script, which originated from the Han Dynasty in China. This calligraphic style is characterised by its flowing and somewhat connected brushwork, falling between Regular Script (Kai Shu 楷书) and Cursive Script (Cao Shu 草书) in terms of formality and legibility. (Click to check Other Main Scripts in Chinese Calligraphy.)

Our Fully Tailored Experience : The Semi-Cursive Script carries a unique charm, flowing along a spectrum between the steadiness of Regular Script and the freedom of Cursive Script. For those drawn to order and clarity, its structured forms offer a reassuring starting point. For those seeking movement and expression, its fluid strokes open a pathway to graceful freedom.

Our Heritage

introduce-founder-of-chong-zheng-academy-since-1912

The Legacy of Chinese Calligraphy

Our founding father, Dr. Lai Bei Lau (黎庇留医家), was officially named as one of Guangdong’s four great physicians (广东四大名医) in the late Qing Dynasty period. In 1912, he established his own private medical practice (崇正草堂 Chóngzhèng Cǎotáng) which also doubled up as an academy of classical learning (古书院), a sanctuary for learning and healing.

Wan-Chung is the fourth generation member of the family. He seeks to revitalise his century-old family brand which, at its core, has always been about supporting others to rediscover a sense of self, truth and beauty.

Wan-Chung aims to promote Chinese calligraphy to the new generation, to those keen to rediscover their Chinese roots, and all who wants to explore the beauty of Chinese culture.
