Chinese Calligraphy for Beginners
An introduction to the art and soul of Chinese calligraphy for Beginners.

What You’ll Experience in the Beginner’s Calligraphy Class
INK ORIGINS
Discover the Roots
Step into the world of Chinese calligraphy by understanding its cultural and historical significance. You’ll learn how calligraphy has shaped art, philosophy, and daily life for centuries—and why it remains a living, expressive tradition today. This context helps you see beyond the strokes and connect with the spirit behind each character.
Master the Fundamentals
Get hands-on with brush, ink, and paper as you learn the essential building blocks of calligraphy. From holding the brush correctly to understanding pressure, speed, and rhythm, you’ll practice foundational strokes that form the basis of every character. These fundamentals give you the confidence to progress from simple lines to flowing scripts.
Create Single-Character Blessings
Channel your practice into writing meaningful characters such as 福 (good fortune), 寿 (longevity), 喜 (happiness), and 恩 (gratitude). These timeless blessings are not only fun to learn, but also deeply symbolic—perfect for creating gifts or decorations with a personal touch. We’ll guide you through both the technical form and the cultural meaning behind each.
Go Beyond One Word
Once you’ve built confidence with single characters, you’ll start combining them into short phrases, couplets, and even simple poems. This is where calligraphy becomes more expressive and personal. You’ll learn how to arrange characters beautifully on the page, balance composition, and let your brushwork convey emotion. Writing phrases like 平安喜乐 (peace and joy) or excerpts from beloved poems allows you to see your progress in tangible, inspiring ways.
Take Home Pride
By the end of the class, you’ll complete a polished piece of artwork on premium rice paper. Whether it’s a single blessing character, a meaningful phrase, or a short poem, you’ll bring home a creation that reflects both your learning and your artistic spirit—something you’ll be proud to display or gift.
